You may just be able to make out the propellar sticking up out of the dark patch of shingle in the centre of the picture. I had spotted the prop and was making my way towards it. I spotted the "blade" sticking up out of the sand and went to investigate. It turned out to be a propellar attached to an engine, the remains of an airoplane wreck. A little research on the net on my return home and it seems that this is the remains of a Spitfire which crash landed here in September 1941 after an engine failure. Fascinating! What's more fascinating is that this particular Spitfire was donated or "presented" by the towns of Accrington, Church and Oswaldtwistle. Church is where my wife's family are from and who may well have contributed to the £6000 for its purchase. The pilot survived, though he must have had a long walk out - its 4 miles from the nearest road. This was a surprise! Sandwood Bay, North West Scotland. The reduction gear and prop has sheared off the crank case. Thanks Steve. We pitched the tent in a thunderstorm having broken one of the poles in our rush to stay dry. In the end we fixed the pole (duck tape) and a bit of bailing and mopping out had us almost dry.
